ICT-Rich Learning Experience.

As a part of this weeks (Week 8) learning path we were required to share an ICT-based learning experience. I chose a learning experience I have incorporated into assignment 2. Within assignment 2 I have utilised the 5E’s instructional model for learning. Each of the 5 E’s describes a phase of learning, and each phase begins with the letter “E”: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. The 5 E’s allows students and teachers to experience common activities, to use and build on prior knowledge and experience, to construct meaning, and to continually assess their understanding of a concept. Kerry Baldwin has also blogged about the 5E’s and how she plans to incoporate them into her assignment 2.

For my ICT-based introductory learning experience I have utilised the content descriptors:

Science Understanding – Earth and Space Sciences

  • The Earth is part of a system of planets orbiting around a star (the sun) (ACSSU078)

Science Inquiry Skills – Communicating

  • Communicate ideas, explanations and processes in a variety of ways, including multi-modal texts (ACSIS093)

I will initially engage my students by, as a class, using an online KWL chart to ascertain what students know about space (i.e. the Sun, Planets, we live on Earth, etc). Students will then think about what they want to learn about space (why is it dark at night, how far away from the Sun is Earth, etc). This might be a good opportunity to watch an interactive video about space like the one provided:

This introduces students to basic information about the Sun and all Planets. Students could initially watch the video once, listening carefully to information. Students could then watch the video for a second time this time filling out information about the Sun and each Planet on a table. Once students have completed their tables, they can share what they have learned on KWL chart (the Sun is hot, Mercury is made out of iron, etc). This chart can then be printed out and hung around the room or in the science corner.

What’s the Difference Between ‘Using Technology’ and ‘Technology Integration’?

This page has really helped me to ensure not only this learning experience but all learning experiences for assignment 2 are not just using technology but integrating technology successfully to enhance student learning.
